What I liked:

The beginning of a truly epic story. Yet this first installment contains a full story in its own right.
The world building is rich and much is only hinted at in this installment of the series
I enjoyed that the story is told through shifting points of view among the main characters. It allowed for far more insight into motivations than a single point of view would have.

What I didn't like:

I found myself so interested in some of the characters that I resented the long chapters before the story switched back them.
